Photos flying into CuzcoFirst landing in Lima, I took a flight to Cuzco in the morning. The plane hovered just above the Andes, before "descending" to Cuzco, elevation 2 miles.
CuzcoCuzco (or Cusco) is the former Incan capital and is now the launching pad for hikes to Macchu Picchu.
Patrimonios FestivalCuzco is a World Heritage city, there was a demonstration/parade in the town square on Dec 7th. Seemed like every school child and union in the city was there, circling the town square chanting, will signs whose words I could barely make out.
Sacsahuaman/QencoSacsahuaman was an Incan fortress overlooking the city. Only the huge foundation stones remain where previously stood 100 ft tall stone towers. Qenco is a religious site nearby.
Inka TrailA four day trek up and down the Andes, the trail overlaps with original Incan roads.
Sayaqmarka and WiñawaynaTwo major ruins on the Incan trail. The Wiñawayna site was predominantly agricultural in function, while Sayaqmarka appears to be militaristic.
Macchu PicchuOn the fourth morning we reached our destination; I was somewhat disappointed to find the initial views obscured by clouds.
LimaAfter Cuzco, I returned by bus to Lima for a few days visiting museums and hanging out with new friends.
